It's always bugged me, because I couldn't believe all the white couples in Gilead would accept a baby that wasn't white. The commanders being able to assert a racial preference for their handmaids makes a lot more sense.

In the book they relocate all the African-Americans apartheid style to the mid-west and kill all the Native Americans. Seems the show decided to leave that part out in its adaptation. Perhaps they wanted the focus of the show to be on sexism instead of racism and that would have been too much of a hot potato to produce. I dunno, would be interesting to know why.

I'd be ok with this as long as I can escape one week out of every month haha

This happened 2 years ago.

And we didn't technically "elect" her. We elected a whole bunch of parties to parliament and her party formed a coalition with 2 other parties. She got the PM job as her party was in a key position for the formation of any viable coalition.

Same thing happened in New Zealand with our PM

I feel generally meh about Ruby Rose's role in the series. Her character was dull, her plot was uninteresting, and I didn't get all the hype about her appearance.

She truly ruins every movie or show she is in.

I watched it just yesterday. Not gonna lie the uhhhh lesbian portion was cool but in general I was kind of uncomfortable with the plot as a whole. I didn’t like how rape was used in the plot because it seemed like it was almost treated as a valid part of the whole mysticism. There was one good line where the older girl (can’t remember their names tbh) said “they told us it was for a higher purpose, but it wasn’t. it was just rape.” Or something to that end — but the movie as a whole didn’t seem to fit that idea. I just wish movies about “strong female characters” weren’t so reliant on rape as a plot device to mold the women into “broken but beautiful” or some bullshit. Why can’t we have a lesbian horror movie about like, an alien invasion or something WITHOUT catering to the same gross rape fetishization?

Edit: also I’m just super fucking confused about the ending scene... what exactly is even going on there??

The 'Saw' levels of brutality were quite unexpected. Kinda seems like they shoved that end scene in for shock value. Unsure where they were going with that. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6304046/?ref_=adv_li_tt is a good one if you haven't seen it yet.

......um. 😬
